Militaria auction acquires edged weapons from estate of noted veteran

F. Warner Karling collection up for bid through Manion’s International Auction House

Kansas City, Kan. (September 8, 2008) – When a descendant of F. Warner Karling heard she would soon be receiving an inheritance from her distinguished Great-Great Uncle, she didn’t know what to expect. When a box filled with antique swords arrived on her doorstep, she was overwhelmed.

While she appreciated her relative’s roll in history, her current situation - with young children running around the house - was not the most conducive to beginning an edged weapon collection. After considering a museum donation, she decided to contribute the swords to the collecting community by consigning them with Manion’s International Auction House.

According to Herringshaw’s American Blue Book of Biography, F. Warner Karling had a distinguished military career. He served with Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War, was in the artillery in the Philippine War and the Boxer Rebellion. He also served in WWI and was the sixth Commander in Chief of the V.F.W.

“In our line of work, we are continually amazed by our proximity to great men,” said Manion’s representative John Conway. “To think that these swords were brought home by Colonel Karling as souvenirs from these historic campaigns really hits home when you hold one in your hands.”

Manion’s International Auction House has been brokering the sale of militaria and historic collectibles since 1970, and is one of the nation’s oldest auction houses specializing in these types of items.

“We have handled items from many notable historic figures – as well as items from less prominent figures who served their country with equal valor,” said Conway. “We realize family members and collectors have many choices when the time comes to sell these significant artifacts, and we are always honored when Manion’s is selected to broker the sale.”
