Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) collection presented by Manion’s International Auction House

GAR memorabilia, Presidents Lincoln and Grant mourning items, and US Centennial commemoratives featured on www.manions.com

Kansas City, Kan (June 13, 2007) - Manion’s International Auction House (www.manions.com) is pleased to announce the acquisition of an extensive Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) badge collection. It includes hundreds of unique items dating back to the beginning of the Civil War Union Veteran’s organization.

The GAR was founded in 1866 and grew to be an influential political force in the nation for several decades. State delegations held yearly ‘encampments” where members would reunite and political agendas were discussed.

A badge, ribbon, or medal was issued to commemorate each encampment, listing the date and other specifics of the occasion. These mementos were tucked away by the Union Vets after the event, and have become cherished collectibles by militaria collectors of today.

Manion’s International Auction House has recently acquired the collections of multiple lifelong collectors of GAR and related memorabilia. The anthologies consist of several hundred items and feature additional historic pieces from the same era, including: Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant mourning and memorial articles, US Centennial commemoratives, and Civil War unit specific decorations.

“These GAR, and related items, are of great interest to serious collectors, museums, and archivists for many reasons,” said Manion’s International representative John Conway. “The are historically significant, easy to store and display, and reasonably affordable.”

In addition, for those who are interested in Civil War era history, but have not began collecting, GAR items are an excellent place to start.

“These pieces are an excellent entry point for someone interested in beginning a Civil War collection,” said Conway. “GAR items can be a springboard to a fascinating hobby for those with a love of history in their heart.”

Items from the collection are currently available for bid on www.manions.com, and new objects will be added on a regular basis throughout the remainder of the year. For more information, visit the website or call 866.626.4661.
