Local Business to Test-Drive Four Day Workweek

Manion’s International Auction House will try four 10-hour days in July

Kansas City, Kan. (July 7, 2008) – With gasoline at an all time high, and other expenses rising concurrently, one Kansas City business is experimenting with new ways to lower overhead – for the company and it’s employees.

“We’re going to give it a shot and see how it works out,” said company CEO Jody Tucker. “I’m anticipating our utility bills will be lower, and I know employees who live furthest away will appreciate not having to burn the gas.”

The Internet auction company, located in Western Wyandotte County, has employees who drive to work from as far away as Blue Springs, Mo. and Stanley, Kan.

“I drive about 45 minutes each way,” said description writer Ken Hatfield. “I’m going through about $60 a week in gas  - not having to make the drive once a week will really make an impact.”

The company has been brokering the sale of historic collectibles, with a heavy emphasis on military items, since 1970.

“We’re surrounded by historic items all day long in our unique line of work,” said Tucker. “We preserve history by connecting collectors with collectibles – but now we need to figure out a way to conserve during this unique time in history.”

Tucker said Manion’s was in a unique position to make such a change since the company does not have an excess of “walk-in” business.

Manion’s is an online business and doesn’t have the traditional requirements of a brick and mortar operation,” said Tucker. “We have auctions closing 365 days a year on our website – including weekends and holidays, so this shouldn’t be much different.”

Tucker said he didn’t anticipate any customer service issues, but is prepared to be flexible during this transitional period. Employees will now work 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday, beginning Wednesday, July 9. The company may resume their standard workweek after the summer.

“We’re going to see how it goes,” said Tucker. “We’ll know more at the end of the month.”
