William Kalencik served 30 years as a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy from WW II through Korea and Vietnam, and was
attached to five separate Marine Divisions. He joined at the age of 17 with the permission of his mother;
1944 found him attached to the Marines. ‘Doc’, as he was known, was scheduled for the invasion of Saipan
but was injured in the West Loch disaster at Pearl Harbor where 163 were killed. Doc was good to go for
Okinawa and landed on Easter Sunday 4/1/45 (the same day Ernie Pyle was killed by a Jap sniper). The Navy
suffered nearly 5,000 dead and the Marines almost 8,000. At the end of the war, Doc returned to his home in
Harlem, New York, but promptly reenlisted. He retired a thirty year man in 1973.
In the 1980s, he opened Doc’s Military Surplus and Collectibles in Surfside Beach, SC. Doc’s was a favorite for
military enthusiasts and a great place to hear war stories. The legendary establishment closed down in 2009, and
Doc is enjoying a well earned retirement.
