Sale Price: $54.40
Description: Standard pocket diary. Calendar and almanac information. Entries begin January 15 by summarizing his call-up and commission in November. Actual entries by date start around Jan 16. Tells of voyage to France. Mon Nov 11, 1918 described as "Greatest day in History of world". Tues Nov 12, 1918 "German prisoners and Austrians apparently as happy over signing of armistice as any". Tues Dec 24 "Xmas Eve. Stayed in Camp gloomy, everyone apparently sad being away from his family. Can`t blame anyone for getting drunk time like this". There is also a small photo of a young lady, with writing in French on reverse "Une amie rencontree pendant la guerre May 1919 Georgette". He records his pay, letters to his wife, the address of Georgette and those of a number of his wartime companions, many of whom belonged to 461st 471st or 478th Aero squadrons. He mentions meeting a man who was a classmate of Kurt Vonnegut, possibly the father of the famous author. Vonnegut senior was an architect, and the author of the diary appears to have spent much of his wartime service in France building hospitals. This is a book that merits special study and will provide much detail on the lives of ordinary men caught up in extraordinary times. If you are worthy to own this book, it is priced quite reasonably for the story it represents. By the way, the author`s handwriting is quite legible.
