LARGE ESTATE GROUPING OF ITEMS BELONGING TO CHAMPION MARKSMAN, PRIVATE JOHN ALDEN NUTTING

Large and rare grouping of materials, belonging in part to Private John Alden Nutting, member of Company F, 2nd Infantry, California National Guard, who enlisted in that unit on May 25, 1908, was honorably discharged on October 21, 1911, re-enlisted in the same unit on November 1, 1911, and was honorably discharged on January 1, 1913. The lot includes: 1) a March 31, 1934 dated document w/companion letter, verifying this man`s service as stated above; 2) 3 of Nutting`s personal marksman medals, to include: Best Rifle Shot in the State - Regimental Trophy, 1911, Best Rifle Shot in the Nation - Adjutant General Trophy 1911 - Best Shot at Camp Perry Matches - 21 karat gold Marksman bar 1909, and Best Shot in Monterey War Manoeuvers 1912; 3) three original B/W photos of the 1911 Champion Rifle Team of the State of California that Nutting was a member of, with the two trophies pictured in from of the team; 4) original B/W photo of the three Officer`s of that winning Rifle team: Captain Carl Nichols, 1st Lt. Julius Craft and 2nd Lt. Lester Caldwell; 5) B/W photos of each of the trophies won by that team; 6) actual Adjutant General`s Trophy for State Rifle Competition, 1911, won by Co. F, 2nd Infantry Regt., National Guard of California, standing 20" high, engraved to the front, maker marked STERLING to bottom [which is also marked "10 pints], and having intricate & ornate oak leaf and acorn trim. Lots of patina; 7) actual Regimental State Trophy of the 2nd Infantry Regiment, National Guard of California, State Rifle Competition, 1911, won by Company F, Second Infantry Regiment, N.G.C., standing 14" tall, engraved to front, maker marked STERLING, and also marked "Base Loaded" to bottom. Displays some storage soiling as well as patina; 8) newspaper photo of three members of that rifle team at a reunion, holding the Adjutant-General`s trophy; 9) original 1954 photo of Nutting with rifle; 10) copy of the California National Guard "Brief History of Woodland Unit 1863-1951" that belonged to one of the team members, having photo of the Rifle Team and trophies inside; and 11) two newspaper clippings "75 Years Ago, 1911" that speaks about the rifle competition.
