JAPANESE CASED 1894-95 WAR MEDAL W/RIBBON + ARMY PHOTO

Established by Imperial Edict No. 143 of October 9, 1895, for the Sino-Japanese War, & made from the metal of captured enemy cannons. Medallion is 30mm in diameter, die struck, dark bronze w/swivel suspension, obverse showing crossed Navy and Army flags w/Chrysanthemum crest above, reverse has characters "Meiji 27-8 Years" around the top & "War Medal" in middle. Nice example of the medal. Ribbon is 36mm watered silk, equal stripes of 12mm green/white/green, and has uniform hook to rear. Ribbon slightly soiled. Comes in black lacquered wooden hinged display case w/bronze shield-shaped locking clasp to front, red polished cotton padded lid lining and red velveteen form fitted interior display area. RARE! Comes with period studio photo of a Japanese soldier dressed in early blue uniform, wearing a Red Cross Membership Medal and an Army Sharpshooter Badge, edged weapon at side, and having "2" to shoulder straps.
