"HOLD FAST" THE 9TH INFANTRY DIVISION IN THE ETO. PRINTED IN GERMANY.
Click above image for full size photos below.
Soft Cover- Full Title- "Hold Fast: Historical Bits of Pathos, Lore, Heroism and Satire about the Veteran Ninth Infantry Division". This little volume of oddities starts with a explanation of the division`s patch, the Octofoil. Why an Octofoil for the NINTH? "Back in the 15th Century, it was customary for each son to have an individual mark of distinction. In foiling, there are eight foils (positions). Heraldic rules gave the OCTOFOIL to the ninth son, as it was symbolic of his being surrounded by eight brothers; which is the explanation of why this eight-petaled insignia is correct for the Ninth Regular Army Division." (page 2). Many other wonderful anecdotes fill the pages of this volume, including a three page article by war correspondent and Pulitzer Prize winner Ernie Pyle. Printed in Munich, Germany. B/w photos. 48pp. Condition: 7
