JAPANESE CASED FIRST NATIONAL CENSUS COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL ON RIBBON W/ARMY PHOTO

This award was created by Imperial Edict No. 272 on June 17, 1921, for those who directly participated in the first national census and those who assisted them. The medal is 30mm in diameter, bronze, w/obverse having outline of a Chrysanthemum crest and the figure of a local official of the Taika era about 645 A.D., while the reverse inscription reads "Taisho 9th Year National Census Commemorative Medal 5th year 10th month 1st day." The ribbon is 38mm watered silk, consisting of stripes of 2mm white/11mm purple/11mm white/11mm purple/2mm white, and has uniform hook to rear. Comes in balsa wood case w/stamped gilt lettering, medal display area is form-fitted white velveteen. Medal displays some green oxidation to front [mostly cleanable]. Comes w/a rare original B/W studio photo of an Army soldier in dark overcoat and cap, w/slight damage to very top of pic. Unusual. Condition: 7
