VICKSBURG MEDAL OF HONOR WILLIAM B. WARD - 47TH OHIO INFANTRY 1860 STAFF & FIELD SWORD
Click above image for full size photos below.
German made 1860 Staff and Field sword has 31" blade etched in design on 1 side - named to William B. Ward of the 47th Ohio Infantry on the other side. Ricasso marked "Germany". Gilt brass hilt with wire wrapped grip. Nickel scabbard has brass fittings. Includes black leather waist belt with late pattern 1851 Buckle + matching hanger straps with brass fittings. Belt is Detroit maker marked on tongue. Pretty clean. Ward Led a re-supply mission down the Missisippi river past besieged Vicksburg and managed to survice numerous fuselades of Confederate fire to complete the mission. At one point moral was so low among the volunteers on the mission that Ward climbed atop the cabin of the Steam boat with revolver in hand to rally his troops. Lot includes Photo-copy image of Ward, copy of article from Civil War Magainze with cover story on the incident + letter of background with opinions from Sword people confirming the sword is a late pattern no doubt presented to Ward by member so of the 47th Ohio or GAR. Beautiful piece. Interesting to note the 47th Ohio was one of the most highly decorated units of the Union Army and not for re-enlistments! Condition: 8
