Japan`s first national decoration, this medal was established by the Council of State Decree of April 10, 1875, and was used as a general order of merit, awarded to Japanese and foreigners. The silver Decoration of the White Pawlonia Leaves is 31mm x 33mm, w/the crest having 3, 5, and 3 flowers, and the reverse has the usual four characters in gilt on plain polished silver background [medal displays nice light bluish and golden patina]. The 38mm ribbon is white watered silk w/6mm red edges and has uniform hook to rear. It comes with the red & white rosette lapel device. Medal is housed in a black lacquered wood box w/gilt lettering on the lid. The inside lid is purple padded satin with purple satin hinge material and the display area is purple form-fitted velveteen. Comes with original B/W photo of two Army 4th Imperial Guard Regiment soldiers [one a Private 2nd Class and one a Superior Private] in uniform, wearing early style collar flashes and one w/edged weapon. Removed from photo album.  Condition: 8
