"F.D.R. THE MAN OF THE HOUR" ANIMATED MANTLE CLOCK

Cast metal figure of Franklin Roosevelt, standing at the helm of a ship. The inlaid clock features a scene from a bar or club where people are drinking cocktails. The arm of the bartender is designed to move up and down as he shakes a martini. I believe the scene refers to the repeal of Prohibition which occurred early in Roosevelt`s first term. Roosevelt was a yachtsman and Secretary of the Navy, so the nautical reference is quite apt. It is a bit unusual, and striking to today`s viewer, to see Franklin Roosevelt depicted in a standing pose. But, according to what I`ve read, at the time of his early presidency, many people were unaware of his handicap and journalists avoided photographing him in a wheelchair. The clock, unfortunately is not currently functional. It does deserve a good restoration to the time indicator and cocktail shaker functions. 15-1/2" tall.  Condition: 8
