WWI US NAVY AVIATOR WINGS & FLIGHT LOG BOOK OF ENSIGN NATHAN WELLS MALLORY, 1918-1919
Click above image for full size photos below.
Beautiful, 2-1/2" gold finish aviator badge is pin back with open catch. Classic WWI pattern. "Aviator`s Log Book" recording Ensign Mallory`s training flights from October 18, 1918 thru June 10, 1919. He began in the N-9, a float variation of the famous Curtiss JN-4, and advanced to the HS-2L flying boat. Each flight is logged by date, type & number of aircraft, duration, instructor, purpose of flight, such as landing practice, formation, turns, spirals, navigation, gunnery, etc. Additional documentation includes Mallory`s "Completing School Report" from the US Naval Air Station in San Diego, which accompanied him when he was transferred to Pensacola, Florida in December 1918. He is described by his superiors as "Average officer material. Intelligent. Well disciplined, conduct and bearing good". Report notes Mallory was retained at Pensacola as a flight instructor. A War Risk Insurance card & report card from Pensacola round out the lot. Great documentation of early USN aviation, offering insights into the training of pilots in the period just after WWI.
